Plantations were successful industries in America’s early past and several of historical significance is still in existence. Charlotte, North Carolina, is home to several plantations that have been preserved.

The Latta Plantation was built in 1800 and was owned by Ireland immigrant James Latta. He grew cotton with the help of 34 enslaved people on 742 acres of land. He died in 1837 leaving his wife the property, which she sold to William Sample in 1853. Sample ran the farm until 1922. It was then sold to Crescent Land and Timber. Sadly, in the 1950s the home was abandoned and left to decay.

Latta Plantation’s historical importance was noticed and the farm was saved. It is now used for summer camp programs, field trips and regular tours.

Another historically significant Charlotte Plantation is Rosedale. The estate was built in 1815 by Archibald Frew, who was a tax collector, store owner and postmaster. The farm was a 919 acre spread that served as a cotton mill, press, blacksmith shop and orchard. It was owned by Sarah Frew, Archibald’s sister, and run by The Caldwell family until Dr. Caldwell’s death in 1861. The Plantation is open for tours and guides present a detailed account of the farms past adventures.

If you have not had the thrill of rafting or kayaking on a river, you are missing an experience of a lifetime. Spending time outside floating the river can create memories you will never forget. You will be able to see scenes of nature on the river that can not be enjoyed any other way. Bring your lunch, and stop along the way for a picnic and time in the sun. Swim along the edge of the river before you continue your ride down stream.

Rafting and kayaking are easily learned and people of all ages can quickly learn to enjoy this sport. Wear your life jacket, bring your sun screen and get ready for a great day on the river. There are rafting companies that can outfit with all of the equipment necessary. You will be driven up stream for the beginning of your journey and someone will be there to pick up at the end of the journey. They can ever offer you quick instructions or a guide to float with you. Prepare to get wet and have the best time of your life when you spend an enjoyable day on the river enjoying the great outdoors. This is a adventure the whole family can enjoy.

There are a number of great museums in Charlotte, North Carolina that give off a rich history for cultural and artistic aspects. One nice museum to go to in Charlotte is the 82nd Airborne Division War Memorial Museum that not only includes the history of the 82nd Airborne Division but also a lot of military history as well. Seeing as the museum is located at Fort Bragg, it already has an aesthetic appeal to military history. There are number of great exhibits that include rifles, handguns, and different captured uniforms. The Airborne & Special Operations Museum offers some great airborne and special operations history. There’s a lot to learn as they offer a great curriculum from kindergarten to the 12th grade for a more hands-on based experience. Right in Chapel Hill, they have their own museum which caters to the arts. There’s a lot of art on display from North Carolina as well as 1940′s streetscape and designer, Alexander Julian. It’s a very nice site to check out events, exhibits, and other interesting things. The North Carolina Museum of History is a spectacular and more in depth place. There’s numerous exhibits, artifacts, and sites just for the kids to enjoy.
